Wrekin MP, Mark Pritchard, said he will "fight with all his might" plans by Shrewsbury & Telford NHS Hospital Trust to cut overnight paediatrics and 24 hour Accident & Emergency cover from the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford, which he claims will put "Telford & Wrekin and East Shropshire lives at risk".

The Wrekin MP, has led a 7 year campaign warning about possible cuts - and has collected a Parliamentary Petition against the cuts which has attracted over 10,000 names.

Mark Pritchard (The Wrekin) (Con): I would like to say well done to my hon. Friend on securing the debate. Acute hospitals have been mentioned. Given Shropshire's growing population-on the Welsh border side of the county, on the eastern side and on the south-eastern side, where that affects his constituents-is it not vital that the acute hospitals retain their 24-hour, seven-days-a-week accident and emergency facilities, particularly the paediatric unit at the Princess Royal hospital?

Dawn Primarolo: Proposals for the reconfiguration of services are a matter for the national health service locally, which in this case means all four NHS organisations in Shropshire, working in conjunction with clinicians, patients and other stakeholders, as they understand the needs of local patients best.

Last rites for Shropshire's hospital chaplains

Wrekin MP, Mark Pritchard, has written to Health Secretary Alan Johnson MP protesting at plans by Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Hospital Trust to cut hospital chaplains serving Shropshire's two main hospitals in Telford and Shrewsbury.

The Trust has announced that it plans not to renew the chaplaincy contract from April 2009 for four serving part time chaplains. In future, chaplains will need to be contacted from outside the hospital.

This cutback will mean that the current 24 hour on call chaplaincy service will not be able to continue.
